Main Rules Of Loft Design
Loft is a
modern trend of interior design that gains more and more popularity each year.
It appeared in the industrial blocks of New York City. The land price in the
center of the city became so high that the factory owners considered that it
would be cheaper to remove their stuff to suburbs. So, the large spacious rooms
were abandoned, but it did not last long. The city bohemians got interested in
them. The price was lower than of usual apt, the space more than enough and so
the light. A little bit of stylish design and here it is – a perfect place for
big parties and artistic performances.
Trendy
artists opened their galleries and expositions in lofts. With time such kind of
apt gained the status of elite dwelling – historic center of the city, large
space in ancient buildings simply could not be cheap. The prices became too
high for the people of art. People of law and finance took their places. Still new
dwellers did not want to lose that bohemian charm of lofts. So, what was
earlier the sign of poverty became a trend and cost a fortune to reconstruct.
What are
the main principles of a true loft?
1. Loft is a place that has history. If
the building is new, it can be only a stylization. The whole idea of loft is
that it is a space that was not created for living, but was transformed into
such with the artistic heart and soul. The aesthetic of the old building cannot
be expressed in any new house.
2. Loft must not look glamorous and
luxury. It must look like an industrial space that was adapted for living.
3. Loft is an open space. It has no
walls, only zones. The zones have a very subtle division to keep the space
open. It can be performed with the help of furniture or glass wall partition but the partitions must not reach
the ceiling.
4. Open communications. Loft is proud
of its industrial history and shows it off. The tubes, girders, brick walls
make it look severe, rough and shabby – true bohemian chic!
5. Add some creativity. Poor artists
who lived in lofts decorated them with any garbage they could find. It is the
best place for the brave ideas and crazy junk installations.
