Hatchback, Sedan Or Universal?



Hatchback is a quite popular car body type. It is more compact and has more modern design than a classic sedan model. Not everyone knows that it appeared in 1940s and the first company that produced them was Citroёn. Then American company Kaiser Motors was next to manufacture two types of hatchback cars – Frazer Vagabond and Kaiser Traveler. Still, it were Japanese who made this body type popular. In Europe they became widespread after the appearance of Renault 16.

Hatchback has 3 or 5 doors, 1 or 2 seat rows and a short back part. Also it has a door in the back wall. Usually the whole car is shorter than sedan. It is a very important feature for driving in a big city, because it is a good economy of space. Hatchback has a downhill roof that slinks into the trunk’s lid. No matter what the volume is, the back stays short.

What choice of car will be better – sedan, hatchback or universal? Let us compare the two body types for determining their advantages and disadvantages. So, hatchback has such pluses:
1.       Compact size and short back that makes it excellent in maneuvering through big city.
2.       Wide trunk that allows to carry large luggage items.
3.       Attractive and modern look that is popular among youngsters.
But it cannot go without minuses either. They are:
1.       No partition between salon and trunk. You will feel and hear all the smells and sounds from the trunk while driving.
2.       Trunk makes the salon bigger and thus, longer to warm up in cold days.
3.       Still the trunk is smaller than in sedan.
The main pros of sedan are:
1.       Looks classier, popular among older people.
2.       The trunk is isolated and will not bother you while driving.
And its cons:
1.       The trunk is small. The salon too.
2.       Still sedan is bigger than hatchback, it makes difficulties in big city.
Now let us compare hatchback and universal. Hatchbacks are much cheaper and look more stylish, but their trunk is smaller. Universals look more classic and are more spacious. If you have small family, hatchback will be the better idea among all of them.
